La gente que me conoce sabe que siempre ando con un libro en la cartera. Solía ser de las personas que leía un libro a la vez, pero con los libros del Club, y los que encuentro por ahí que me llaman la atención, mejor me resulta leer varios a la vez y avanzar poco a poco.
Every person who knows me also knows that I’m always carrying a book with me. I used to read one book at a time, but with the Book Club books, and the other ones I want to read, I realized it is better to read many books simultaneously and move along little by little.
No me imagino la vida sin un libro; me gustaba encerrarme a leer desde pequeña, en mi casa había muchos libros y para todas las edades. Recuerdo que me encantaba leer porque mi mente entraba en ese mundo, mi imaginación volaba a otros lugares, y eso me encantaba. Me encanta hasta hoy…
El nuestro Club de Lectura durante este año leímos géneros muy variados, la idea es leer cosas nuevas. A veces nos enfocamos sólo en los géneros que nos gustan, perdiéndonos la oportunidad de leer algo grandioso! Quiero contarles cuáles fueron mis favoritos del Club este año:

At Book Club, we read different genders this year; the idea is for everyone to try new things. We all tend to read our favorite genders, and we could be missing the chance to read something great! I want to tell you, which were my favorite Book Club’s books of 2017:
Poso Wells, Gabriela Alemán
Leímos este libro a principios del año, y tuvimos la suerte de contar con la presencia de Gabriela Alemán en la reunión del Club para hablar sobre su obra.
Esta novela nos transporta a un ambiente nada alejado de nuestra realidad política, con un toque de ficción fascinante. Su historia está muy bien conectada; sus diálogos, muy pegados a nuestros típicos dichos ecuatorianos, nos dan esa sensación de familiaridad. Sus personajes nos recuerdan a alguien que conocemos en persona, o por televisión. Los veo como personajes reales, a todos. Disfruté mucho este libro. Me mantuvo enganchada de principio a fin, y lo recomiendo muchísimo.
Los cometarios entre las chicas del club que leyeron el libro también fue muy positivo. Tener a Gabriela con nosotros, y que nos cuente cuáles fueron las razones e inspiración para crear esta obra, fue fascinante.

We read this book at the beginning of the year, and we were so lucky to have this amazing author with us at the meeting. Gabriela had the kindness to show up in person and talk about her book with us.
This novel transports us into a world very close to our own political reality, with a touch of fascinating fiction. The story is very well connected; its dialogs have our typical Ecuadorian expressions and give us that familiarity sense. The characters remind us of one or two people we actually know in person or see on national tv. I really enjoyed this book. It kept me hooked until the end, so I highly recommend it.
The comments from the girls at Book Club were very positive. Having Gabriela with us at the meeting, telling us her reasons and inspirations to write this book was fascinating!
Carthage, Joyce Carol Oates
Considero a esta, una novela de suspenso y thriller psicológico. La primera parte del libro relata la angustia y el proceso por el que pasa la familia ante la desaparición de su hija. La historia da un giro inesperado cuando las investigaciones señalan a un joven veterano de Iraq, ex prometido de la hermana mayor de la chica desaparecida, como único sospechoso de su desaparición.
La historia explora uno a uno sus personajes, su pasado y su manera de acoplarse al presente, en medio del dolor.
Me impactó mucho esta novela, la narración de Joyce C. Oates es de primera, no podía dejar de leerlo. Además, su manera de explorar la personalidad de cada uno de los personajes, a través de sus experiencias en el transcurso de sus vidas, es impactante.
A algunas de las chicas del Club les gustó mucho el libro, otras habían empezado a leerlo, pero no les llamó la atención. La reunión del Club de Lectura para hablar sobre este libro fue increíble. Hablamos no solo sobre el complejo personaje principal, Cressida, sino también sobre algunas experiencias personales, recuerdos que salieron a la luz, luego de leer este libro. Muy recomendado.
Carthage, Joyce Carol Oates
I consider this book a suspense and psychological thriller. The first part of the book describes the desperation and terrible process that a family goes through due to the disappearance of their daughter. The story takes an unexpected turn when the investigations lead to a young Iraq veteran, ex fiancée of the missing girl’s older sister, as the only suspect.
The book explores each one of the characters, their past, and their way to adapt to the present and the pain they are going through.
I really enjoyed this book; Joyce C. Oates’ narrative is amazing, I couldn’t put the book down. Her way to explore the personality of each character through their life experiences is astonishing.
Some girls from the Club who read the book also had positive reviews; some started to read it but did not get their attention. The talk we had about it was awesome, though. We didn’t only explore deeply Cressida’s personality (the main character), but we also shared some personal experiences, memories that came to light after reading this book. I highly recommend it.
Divas Rebeldes, Cristina Morató
Es uno de mis libros favoritos, me encantó. Explora la vida, pública y privada, de 7 mujeres íconos de la historia: María Callas, Coco Chanel, Wallis Simpson, Eva Perón, Bárbara Hutton, Audrey Hepburn y Jackie Kennedy. Mujeres que crearon un estilo propio, fueron famosas, admiradas y rebeldes para su época. Todas las divas de este libro tienen algo en común, tuvieron infancias difíciles, marcadas por carencias, tragedias o dolor. Su vida después tampoco fue fácil, pero supieron salir adelante.
Disfruté mucho este libro. Conocía por fama a la mayoría, pero me di cuenta que sabía muy poco de ellas. Me encantó conocer más sobre estas mujeres. La lectura es muy entretenida y me mantuvo enganchada. Me gusta mucho como escribe Cristina Morató, y admiro mucho su trabajo investigativo. No puedo esperar para leer más de sus libros.
Con respecto a la reunión del Club, la opinión de todas fue muy positiva. Nos hizo muy bien leer la vida de estas valerosas y rebeldes mujeres. Lo recomiendo de mil amores, especialmente para nuestra juventud.
Rebel Divas, Cristina Morató
This is one of my favorite books, ever. I loved it. It explores the life, public and private, of seven iconic women: María Callas, Coco Chanel, Wallis Simpson, Eva Perón, Barbara Hutton, Audrey Hepburn and Jackie Kennedy. These women created their own style, they were famous, admired, and rebels for their time. All of them had something in common; they had a difficult childhood, marked by lack, tragedy or pain. Their adult life was not easy either, but they fought for it.
I really enjoyed this book. I knew most of them by fame, but I realized I knew so little of them. I loved to get to know them better; the reading was interesting all the way. I love how Cristina Morató writes, and I really admire her investigative work. I can’t wait to read more of her work!
As for the club meeting, the girls really liked the book as well. It was very inspiring to read about the life of these brave and rebel women. I highly recommend this book, especially for young girls.
La Maestra de Tantra, Diana Prem Shakti
El título de este libro nos llamó la atención cuando lo elegimos para el Club, y terminó siendo mucho más de lo que esperábamos.
Diana nos cuenta su vida, viajes y aprendizajes de una forma muy espiritual. Mientras lo lees, sientes que estás ahí, y viajas con ella para encontrar su esencia. Esa exploración a lo incierto que decide realizar, la lleva por lugares lejanos, donde conoce gente que cambia su vida, prueba sustancias como el yagé, nuevos métodos de meditación, y poco a poco va redescubriendo el amor y el sexo. Y no, el Tantra no se trata sólo de sexo.
Tuvimos la suerte de tenerla con nosotros en la reunión del Club, vía Skype, y fue una reunión muy enriquecedora y especial para nosotras. Diana es una mujer espectacular, conversamos de varios temas, y nos compartió su sabiduría. Fue un privilegio enorme tenerla en nuestra reunión.
La Maestra de Tantra, Diana Prem Shakti
The title of this book caught our attention when we were at the bookstore looking for options, and it ended up being much more than what we expected.
Diana tells us her story, travels and learnings in a very spiritual way. While you read it, you feel like you are there and travel with her to find her essence. That exploration to the uncertain that she decides to take, takes her to far places, where she meets people that change her life. She tries substances such as yage, also new meditation techniques, and step by step she rediscovers love and sex. And no, Tantra is not only about sex.
We were extremely lucky to have her with at the Club’s meeting, via Skype, and it was a very enriching and special meeting for us. Diana is an amazing woman, we talked about various subjects, and she shared her wisdom with us. It was a huge privilege to have her in our gathering.
La Magia del Orden, Marie Kondo
Elegimos este como el último libro del año, queríamos algo que nos ayude a empezar el nuevo año con energías positivas, y realmente en lo personal, este libro ayudó a mejorar muchas cosas dentro de mí.
La autora del libro creó el Método Konmari, el objetivo es mantener nuestra casa ordenada, sólo con las cosas que realmente necesitamos; y como resultado de eso, arreglar muchos aspectos de nuestra vida.
Todo lo que explica en su libro es todo lo que yo nunca hice en mi vida, así que decidí probar su método. Lo que más me costó fue deshacerme de cosas que realmente ya no servían pero que nunca tuve el valor de desechar. Muchas de ellas eran de la época de cuando vivía mi mamá, cuando las veía, sabía que ella las había visto, o me las había comprado, y no podía dejarlas ir (ropa más que nada). Tuve que comprender, que no es el objeto el que tiene el valor, sino el recuerdo. Fue muy duro, pero poco a poco vas sintiendo la diferencia, el alivio, la felicidad, la tranquilidad. Mi madre está en mi corazón, ninguno de esos objetos la representaba, lo que hacían era ocupar espacio, y arrinconarme.
Este libro me ayudó muchísimo y lo recomiendo 100%.
Hace poco tuvimos la reunión del club para hablar de este libro, y quienes lo leyeron aplicaron muchas técnicas del libro y están muy contentas con el resultado.
The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, Marie Kondo
We picked this book as the last one of the year. We wanted a book to help us start the new year with positive energy, and personally, this book helped me improve in many ways.
The author created the Konmari Method, the goal is to keep our home clean, by keeping only the things we really need, and as a result, fix many aspects of our lives.
Everything that this book teaches you to do is everything I have never done in my entire life, so I decided to try her method. The hardest part was to get rid of things that are no longer needed but I never had the courage to do it. Many of those things were from the time when mom was alive; when I used to look at those things, I knew that she looked at them too, or she bought them for me, and I just couldn’t let them go (mostly clothing). I had to understand, that it is not the object that has value, but the memory. It was very hard, but little by little, you start feeling the difference, relieve, happiness, tranquility… My mom is in my heart, none of those objects represented her, but they were taking space, and cornering me.
This book helped me a lot, and I recommend it 100%.
A little while ago, we had the Club’s meeting to talk about this book, and the girls who read it applied many Konmari techniques and are very happy with the results.
De todos los libros mencionados, pienso que Carthage es el único que me hubiera llamado la atención al entrar a una librería. Pero gracias al Club, he conocido géneros nuevos, fuera de mi zona de confort, que me han gustado mucho y me han ayudado también. Así que les invito a probar géneros nuevos, ¡se pueden llevar una gran sorpresa!

From all the books I have just mentioned, I think Carthage is the only one I would have picked up at a bookstore by myself. However, thanks to this Club, I have read new genders, far from my comfort zone, that I have loved. So, my advice to you is: read new genders, you may get a pleasant surprise!
