First things first

This review has no spoilers.

Alice draw my attention because I love Sci-Fi thrillers. When I watched the first episode, I was shocked; it was very intense and promised a very exciting plot.

My personal policy is to write about dramas that I really loved and want to recommend; but this time, I have to admit I have a little conflict, because I loved the concept, but there were certain aspects I didn’t like that much. I will write all about it and I’d like you to give It a chance, because to me, it had more positive than negative, besides, I’d love to know your opinion.

Alice is a South Korean series of 16 episodes, released on August 28th 2020. Its genre is mystery, drama, fantasy, Sci-Fi.

Synopsis

Park Jin-Gyeom is a detective who was born without the ability to feel emotions. While he tries to solve a mysterious case, he is the first person to discover time travelers. In the middle of those struggles, he finds Yoon Tae-yi, a scientist with his mother’s face, who died years ago.

In general terms

I was fascinated by the creepy first episode, and after each one, I was in permanent shock with the turn of events. I like this kind of shocking series.

I think that actually, the first episode was the best one. A couple of time travelers goes to the past to retrieve a prophetic book where there is information about the destruction of time travel. In that period of time she finds out she is pregnant, and to keep her baby safe, she decides to hide in that year (and dimension) in order to raise her child.

Why do I recommend Alice?

The Plot

Lately, we’ve seen many series with the time-traveling and traveling-between-dimensions plot. One of them, by the way, is The King: Eternal Monarch, which is one of my favorites, you can read my review about it here.

In this case, there was something different that draw my attention. In Alice, the main idea is to stop time traveling for good, because many people think that it shouldn’t exist.

There is a book of prophecy that reveals how to end with time traveling, and that is the book that a company called Alice is desperately looking for, in order to keep their business safe. Also, they not only travel in time, but also between dimensions. So, let’s say that you are from the future and want to go back to the past and visit a family member who is gone; you hire that company, and it takes you to the place in time you want, so you can see that person.

But, would you be fine with just seeing that person and then go back to your time?

Maybe at first you only want to see them, but later you’ll want more; like live with them again, avoid their deaths, or maybe get rid of someone who hurt you.

Time travel does not exist (I think…), but it is a debatable matter. I liked the plot, because personally, I think time traveling should not exist.

Imagine what would happen if we had that chance… Common people like me, would want to go back and save a loved one, buy a winning lottery ticket or change a bad decision. On the other hand, great powers would go back to change key moments in history to their favor.

I think the world as it is now, is the result of unnumbered decisions, and we, as individuals, are who we are as a result of the things we went through, people we lost and traumas we faced.

The idea is to live in the present and learn from everything we’ve experienced in life; also, let go of those who died, because that is the law of life, we all must die someday.

Wow… I wrote too much about my personal opinion of time travel! Anyway, it is a drama that makes you analyze a few things. I liked that.

The main characters

Park Sun-young is a scientist who created the technology to travel through time. She and her boyfriend travel to the past to find the one thing that could destroy her creation.

But everything changes when she realizes she’s pregnant. That mother-love is what makes her change her mind and turn of events.

Like I said, the first episode was the most shocking one for me, specially how her son grew up.

Park Jin-gyeom was born without the ability to feel and express emotions, and it was very disturbing to see how he grew up without feeling empathy towards anyone, including his mother. However, she never stopped loving him and believing in him. I also liked his personality as an adult.

Alice Kdrama 2020 review

Yoon Tae-yi is a genius and a scientist, and she crosses paths with Park Jin-gyeom. The problem is that she has his mother’s face, and that’s when everything complicates even more, but you have to see it for yourself. I like her as well; she is independent and has many academic achievements. Her priority is her work.

Cinematography

This series is very well made in terms of special effects and action sequences.

Locations

I really liked many locations in Alice. My favorite was Yoon Tae-yi’s apartment. It’s big, simple, and filled with books, there is no corner without them; I loved the pile of books she has in front of her desk, an apartment worthy of a scientist and compulsive reader.

I also liked Park Jin-gyeom’s apartment, its colors and simplicity reflect his personality.

The music

The OST is so good! As for the soundtrack, my favorite song is Star, by Onestar and you can listen to it on this YouTube link. Other song I like is Secret, by YUJU, ISHXRK and you can listen to it on this YouTube link.

As for the score, I love it entirely, it’s excellent. My favorite tracks are Help, The Edge, Forget me not, and Searching for you. You can listen to the entire score on this YouTube link. Of course, you can also find the entire OST on Spotify.

Now, what I did not like

I must admit, that the first half of the drama is the best one. After that is good, but a couple of unnecessary things happen.

To me, the ending was good, however, there were a couple of questions I had at the end (or I didn’t get it?) …

And, lastly, there were 2 characters I didn’t like. First, Kim Do-yeon, a reporter and Park Jin-gyeom’s friend, what an intense woman… I felt really annoyed every time she showed up.

And Yoo Min-hyeok, an Alice agent and Jin-gyeom’s father; I liked the man, but it was a totally wasted character.

A little ending note

There were way more positive aspects than negative ones, that’s why I decided to recommend it. Besides, there are many emotional moments and unexpected turns that contributed a lot, and that had to be said.

As for the ending, I guess there will be opposite reactions, it depends on how you see it, I liked it. You know that in K-dramas, what matters is the journey of the series; the ending isn’t usually what we thought would be, and that’s part of their charm. So, let me know your thoughts!

Xoxo,

MJ
